Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

A small selection of anatomical and surgical illustrations — drawn from dissection, imaging, the operating microscope and a ceaseless interest in studying life.

Neurosurgery

Select work created for the Neurosurgical Atlas. Neurosurgery is the branch of medicine I have dedicated my focus to — building a legacy of work, with the intention that each piece stands on its own merits and improves upon the last.

Other fields of medicine

Work provided across other specialties. I look forward to opportunities in other fields of medicine as they arise — chances to be challenged by novel methods of presentation, and to learn new techniques.

About Medbilden

Medbilden endeavors to illustrate the beauty of medical science by collaborating with the best in medicine.

It is obsessed with transforming the complexity of the human body into educational and impactful imagery. Its goal is to push the limits of the art of medical illustration and never settle for work that doesn't inspire.

About the artist

Joshua Klein, MSMI gained his Master of Science in Medical Illustration from Augusta University and Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Toledo.

He is the Director of Illustration at the Neurosurgical Atlas and has dedicated his life to learning the nuances of neuroanatomy and surgery, in order to create illustrations that will stand the test of time in the Neurosurgical Atlas.

He has worked as an illustrator, 3D animator, as well as a department manager in medical animation in the fields of medical education, personal injury law, and pharmaceutical industry.

Behind the name

Medbilden is a portmanteau of 'medical' and 'bilden'. Bilden is a word of germanic etymology that has multiple meanings relating to imagining in one's mind, or to picture, and also educate. This name encapsulates the art of medical illustration. The knowledge from study is applied to the practice of the artist and is employed to formulate imagery that goes beyond the surface. Telling a visual story strategically to make a bigger impact on education.
